You don't need a lot of days in order to enjoy an amazing holiday out of the ordinary; one day or even just a weekend is enough to experience a unique trip aboard of an antique steam train, traveling through parks and the protected areas of Siena and its province, along unknown railways passing through magnificent landscapes. You will reach high mountains and cross breathtaking bridges in one of the areas most loved both by Italians and visiting foreigners.
There will be two planned trips during SIPAContest Festival: the Nature Train will take its passengers on a journey to discover the surrounding areas of Siena in a most unusual way: that is in the slow-moving cars “centoporte” and the epoch locomotive bringing the passengers back in time.
The itineraries last one whole day and are organized in such a way that participants are permitted to stop along the way, in various lost villages along the Sienese countryside, in order to walk through adventurous paths, visiting churches and castles, stopping for tasting typical food in farms or to participate in local celebrations like a “sagra” which is a traditional festival.
The Nature Train also offers the opportunity to go hiking or biking on guided visits and make several stops along the way wherever requested by you. Aboard volounteers from the Ferrovie Valdorcia Associations will illustrate the landscape during the ride.
The initiative is always combined with a special event, such as local festivals and celebrations with the possibility to travel by bus to the location of the event.
Inviting everyone in the truffles home land: the Nature Train will give you the opportunity to taste and purchase the zero kilometers Crete Senesi’s so called “white diamond”.
The old Asciano-Monte Antico railway was re-opened in 1996 as a “touristic route” during festivities, within a project aimed at re-using the side railways laid on areas far from urban and industrial phenomenon, in order to preserve an important “industrial archaeology”. The route lays on a spectacular naturalistic environment and landscape, through the Crete Senesi, passing by highly interesting touristic areas such as Montalcino or Monte Amiata’s hillside. In this area, in which you can also find famous thermal springs and fine grapes used to produce the well-known Brunello di Montalcino wine, it was established the Val D’Orcia Artistic Natural and Cultural Park, is now declared a Unesco World Heritage Site.
A festival which will make you discover ancient tastes, beyond the simple holiday, to discover a slow and sustainable tourism.
